WEBT partners with resident organization, community groups and non-profits to train Emergency Radio Operators in the use of emergency communications tools. These community-based Broadband Operators are trained in the operation of 2-way mobile radios, smartphone walkie talkies and other technology tools that are used to collect and report on conditions and events in their communities.
Residents from public housing developments throughout Harlem and upper Manhattan operate their own Emergency Radio Network. Residents conduct daily radio checks and regular emergency communication alert drills over the Manhattan North Network. During non-emergency periods, they coordinate the flow of information and resources to help maintain public safety and quality of life in their communities.
The WHCR Emergency Broadcast Team utilizes its FCC-licensed mobile radio network to connect residents in Harlem, Northern Manhattan and the South Bronx. The Emergency Radio Teams also use smartphone walkie-talkie applications for backup and redundant communications.
The Harlem Emergency & Information Network (HEN) is a team of community-based Emergency Radio Operators that have provided local emergency information and preparedness training services in Harlem since 2015. HEN partners with the WHCR Emergency Broadcast Team and the Manhattan North Network to provide a local communications safety net in Harlem and the South Bronx.
